It’s January 12th and 2011 is in full swing! We’ve thought of our personal and professional goals and hopefully have written them down somewhere, we can glance at every now and then. Most creatives will be in pursuit of adding new work to their portfolios to stay relevant and fresh; all in an effort to get more of the type of work we like to create. In those efforts creatives such as photographers, designers, illustrators, make up artist, stylist, hairstylist, etc, will undoubtedly be asked to work for free. We know this is part of the path we have chosen as a profession. But we have to be smart and strategic when accepting this type of work.

Free work could come in the way of TFP for a Portrait Photographer. Spec work for a Commercial and Editorial Photographer. It can also come in the form of “New Start-Ups” that need imagery for their business’ promotional efforts and website. In Leslie Burns blog, “Burns Auto Parts,” which is a blog dedicated to the business practices of Creatives, she has a chart that illustrates multiple scenarios where you may be asked to perform your creative services for free and the times it is a smart business decision opposed to an emotional decision that yields no reward.

The criteria that should be used when considering such a request is WIIFM, What’s In It For Me? Its not a selfish way of thinking, It’s a Must…If we want to stay in business. There will be times that these free assignments will take up an incredible amount of time and effort, thus taking away from paid clients, so you’d better ask yourself, what’s my WIIFM?

I have attended the AMPP (Association of Minority Professional Photographers) meeting a few times last year. I learned a lot and met some really great people. I even was referred to a gig from one of its members. It is nice to walk into an organization with people who look like me and are warm and professional. I have been a member of of larger photographer’s organizations in San Francisco. I learned a wealth of information but I don’t feel the commradery that I do with AMPP. This year they are opening up membership to other key people that are needed in the photography biz, like hair and make up artists, stylists and videographers. AMPP is kicking off 2011 with a meeting related to Sports photography on January 5, 2011 at Kimball’s Carnival in Oakland, CA.

For more information check out their Facebook event here. Hope to see you there, I look forward to networking with you!

The day started off with a flat tire…Of course right! I got that fixed and went on my way to meet up with the crew. We met up at 8 am, well the rest of the crew did, instead I picked up fresh coffee to go along with the breakfast and snacks I picked up the night before. You’ve got to have food on a shoot, people get cranky after a few hours. I arrived at the location in Livermore to find hair and make up already going. Loves It! My part doesn’t come until the end, so its great to see things moving right along. (That’s the way Will Mosgrove works) I had already communicated the direction for hair and make up by supplying photos, emails, texts, etc. back and forth weeks prior.

The initial concept came from the designer LaToya Skinner. We had two lovely models for the day Kisura Nyoto, who is a vocalist for a band called Natural Classic, and emerging model Michyl Collins who was recently a feature model for Big Luv Denim.

Make looks were done by Ingrid Marayag, and the best hairstylist I’ve seen work without heat on location, Jaymes Marez,

“The HairArchitec” did the hair.

We did it again and paired up to re-create the 1994 film Thelma and Louise film. I went location scouting the Thursday before the shoot, but not before I did some initial research on google.com where I found the Livermore Valley Film Commission. There I got some great ideas. I found an old car garage on Altamont Pass Rd and another remote location on Dyer Rd that worked out perfectly for the shoot. See the behind the scenes of the crew, lighting and models. Our feature models were Kisura and Michyl.

Soldier of Fashion was the theme of this Fall Editorial shoot idea. We were inspired by Sade’s Soldier of Love song. Jaymes Marez, “The Hair Architect” was inspired by Lady Gaga to create beautifully hand crafted hair pieces. Designer Latoya Skinner of Chanel.Karma Ltd. created military inspired soft looks, incorporating leather leggings and neutral tones with a splash of 80′s inspiration. Ingrid Marayag an emerging talent that I found at Halverson Model Management created beautiful dewy make up looks that added that soft line to such hard edged fashions. Now that you have seen the behind the scenes check out the final photos.

PH balanced water is getting a lot of attention lately in the field of Alternative Health. Why is having the right PH level so important in your water? Because when our water has an alkaline balance it arms our bodies against acidic free radicals that cause cellular damage and aging.

Our bodies are made up of mostly water. Every cell requires it to carry out every function. Keeping the water you put in that body healthy plays a big role in the body’s ability to function at its best.

The following is an add for Isagenix Alkaline IsaWater drops:

One of your most basic needs. Perfected.

Drinking water is key to good health—so why not drink the best water possible? Most of us don’t realize that the water we drink, even bottled or purified may be acidic. That’s why it’s important to add IsaWATER Alkalized Concentrate to your water. By drinking alkalized water, or water with a pH level higher than 7.0, you can maximize hydration at the cellular level.

Our proprietary process delivers a stabilized alkaline concentrate. Just adding 1 mL to an eight-ounce glass of water can energize your water and provide Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) promoting the body’s overall health and wellness by neutralizing free radicals.

Available in 4 oz. bottles for your home or office. You can also purchase an empty 1 oz. travel size bottle, which you can conveniently fill and take with you when on the go.

Why IsaWater Alkalized Concentrate?*

Proprietary process delivers a stabilized alkaline concentrate.

Helps the body to efficiently cleanse away toxins

Energizes water and ensures maximum hydration at the cellular level

Helps the body to perform at optimum levels

Makes your water taste fresher

Neutralizes the harmful free radicals often found in regular drinking water

Perfect for adding to your water before mixing up your IsaLean™ Shakes, Cleanse for Life™ and Ionix® Supreme powders, IsaFruits®, IsaGreens®, or any other Isagenix product that requires water for mixing.

Bottled water in your car is very dangerous! On the Ellen show, Sheryl Crow said this is what caused her breast cancer. It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue. Sheryl Crow’s oncologist told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic! Stay safe everyone.

Are those round purple rings under a persons eyes just another inevitable sign of aging? Is it heredity, or a result of lifestyle? Well, all 3 are actually true. But, there are many things that you can do to help combat dark under eye circles to reduce the appearance, as well as slow the aging process that causes them to show. Vitamin K Good for bruising, vitamin K is an essential part of the healing process. It also helps to prevent new bruises from forming. Kiwi, spinach, avocado, and dark leafy greens are all rich in vitamin K. Vitamin A <ins datetime="2010-05-17T05:32:06+00:00"></ins>

An antioxidant that helps prevent thinning skin, among other things. Thinning of the skin contributes to the appearance of dark circles. Carrots, eggs, and cantalope, and cherries are all wonderful sources of vitamin A. Iron A lack of iron causes skin to look pale. This is just one more skin condition that draws attention to darker areas of the skin. Kidney bean, kale, raisins, prunes, and spinach are just a few of the array of iron-rich foods. Too much salt can also worsen the appearance of under eye circles. It can make the area under the eyes look puffy by causing blood vessels to engorge. So, make sure to limit table salt and be mindful of the sodium content in packaged foods.
